Compulsive Exercise
Often referred to as anorexia athletica, obligatory exercise and exercise addiction. Individuals with compulsive exercise may:
- Repeatedly exercise beyond the requirements for good health.
- Workout beyond the limits of safety.
- Also be anorexic or bulimic and cope with their emotions through excessive workouts.
- Be fanatic about weight and diet.
- Receive praise for being "fit and trim."
- Find ways to work out, even if it means cutting school, taking off work, getting too little sleep or missing social events.
- Forget that physical activity can be fun.
- Define self-worth in terms of performance.
- Rarely or never be satisfied with athletic achievements, and feel small satisfactions are fleeting.
