Nancy W. Berland, PhD

Program Psychologist

<----back to bios

Nancy holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

She has treated eating disorders in private practice since 1979 and was Director of the Eating-Disorder Unit at Brookwood Medical Center for about a decade. Nancy has dedicated her career to spreading awareness and knowledge of eating disorders.

Not only does she treat those struggling with eating disorders, Nancy also teaches about, speaks on and advocates for the issue. Most recently, she gave an invited address at Birmingham Southern College on “Cultural Influences in the Development of Eating Disorders.”

Nancy strikes a beautiful balance between empathy and pragmatism in her practice. She has a multitude of professional awards and accolades, but on her list of accomplishments Nancy puts first: “marriage to a great guy, two children and many great patients.”

Nancy loves a challenge. Her latest is teaching herself to sew, refusing to read a single how-to book – not even instructions for the sewing machine.
